On October 2nd another event moderated by Henri Diederich took place in Cologne Germany, called “Minimal invasive implantation without sinus lift and bone augmentation”. Henri Diederich is touring around Germany with a course that includes pterygoid implants, active discussions and new perceptions of atrophied jaw treatments. According to Germany’s COVID-19 restrictions, all participants had to submit a negative result of PCR test or vaccination certificate.
Increasing interest
Pterygoid implants have received increasing interest in recent years. With the usage of pterygoid implants, faster surgery is achieved due to avoidance of bone grafts, sinus lifts and zygomatic implants which also may result in lower treatment costs. The pterygoid implant was developed to address the issue of implant restoration in the posterior maxilla caused by the existence of the sinus as well as the restricted bone quality of bone in this location. Due to its unique design implant placement in the pterygomaxillary area brings up new possibilities for rehabilitating the atrophic posterior maxilla. Moreover, the implants placed in the pterygomaxillary region are at an angle, there is the non-axial direction of forces to the implant.
Because of the high chance of the pterygoid plate being undamaged, the area is offering a variety of treatment options for the atrophic maxilla. Due to this fact using the area by utilizing pterygoid implants higher case acceptance can be achieved.
Pterygoid implants are different in the way that they allow being fixed in the thin medial pterygoid plate and allow a strong cortical anchorage.
Dr. H. Diederich
H. Diederich mentions that pterygoid implants are different from any other implant in the market because of their properties: “Pterygoid implants are different in the way that they allow being fixed in the thin medial pterygoid plate and allows a strong cortical anchorage.” Another important mention is that cortical bone is resorption resistant and is ready to perform from day 1. Due to specific cortical bone properties such as high mineralisation, it is resistant to infections too.
Course for every dental specialist
A course designed for every specialist to know more about anatomy, possibilities and increase competence. With hands-on experience and the aid of professionals creating the academic environment to learn. Participants from various fields from orthondology to implantology expressed willingness to take part in the next event, which showed quite of interest in the pterygoid region.
Taking into consideration the feedback received, Open Dental Community is organizing even more events. On November 6th in Vienna and on November 13th in Cologne H. Diederich will be meeting dental specialists once more to teach about successful implantation in atrophied bone.
